Em K8: A Blogger and Artist’s Journey Through Music as Therapy and the Modern Music Industry

Trusting My Intuition and Trying Not to Overthink

I’m not quite sure where to start with this post, but here goes.

Over the past few months, there have been some transformations to my blog, the biggest being its domain change. Kaleidoscopic Melodics is no more, and I’m still trying to get used to saying For Love and Gigs in conversation. It doesn’t come naturally just yet.

Throughout the last 20 months, I’ve been navigating anticipatory grief and bereavement. It’s left me feeling incredibly lost at times and if I’m honest, I’m still trying to find my voice as a writer.

One thing I do know is that music is my favourite form of therapy, it’s what inspires this blog, and that’s not going to change.

I write about music.

Now I’m learning to make it too.

It All Started With A Bass Vibration

Back at Christmas 2023, I was chilling with my cousin. We both have a passion for music. He’s been creating his own beats for years, and I decided I wanted to try making a song.

Together, we quickly came up with the chorus, followed by a couple of verses, and before I knew it, Bass Vibration was complete. It didn’t take either of us long to realise we had more collaborations in us, and what started as the Bass Vibration single went onto become Bass Vibration – a four-track EP.

The next three tracks were written in the order they appear on the EP. Unlike Flow Like the Sea and The Speakers Speak, which both came together relatively quickly, Through the Windowpane didn’t. Out of all the tracks, I think that one not only takes listeners on an unexpected journey but also took us on quite the journey while creating it. I have a real soft spot for that one.

All in all, Bass Vibration is a collection of time, thought and memories that represents a lot of love for creativity. The amount of uncontrollable laughter that’s gone into this EP is off the charts, and I like to think the excitement behind it shows when listening through it. Although we’d pretty much finished writing and recording Bass Vibration before anticipatory grief entered my life, continuing to write music has been incredibly therapeutic and has helped guide me through grief.

Somehow, we’ve found a sound that blends my music knowledge with AD’s production style, creating something I could never have foreseen.

While rap has to go down as one of my favourite genres of music, it’s only really been over the past seven years that I’ve started listening to it. I can honestly say I never saw myself releasing rap-style music, but here I am. Writing bars isn’t just so much fun for me, it’s also helping me find myself. It’s given me a newfound sense of confidence and, most importantly, it’s brought me joy.

Sun Kissed Park is the Start of My Next Chapter

My latest single, Sun Kissed Park, is out now, and it’s incredibly special to me. It helped guide me through some incredibly dark days, and I really hope that message comes across when you listen to it.

It’s also the beginning of a brand-new chapter for me. I hope you’ll join me on this journey as I navigate what it’s like to release my own music in the modern age, while continuing to share my love for the music that inspires me.

Much love and light,

Em x
