With my last ‘Song of the Month’ review dating all the way back to 2023 (so much for monthly. Safe to say I completely dropped the ball on that one), I figured it was long overdue for a comeback. Thankfully, inspiration hit hard this May. I first featured American rapper Prof on my site back in 2022 (here), and I’m very happy to bring his name back into the spotlight with his 2026 release, Good Time Boy, as this month’s pick.
I Will Spend Hours of My Life Learning Prof Bars So I Can Get On His Flow
I’ll get this out there straight away: I am a huge Prof fan, and have been for a while now. There’s a very particular energy he brings into my life that no other artist quite matches. His bars are often packed with this chaotic comedic charm that can instantly put a smile on my face (honestly, “motherfucker” is such a cathartic word to sing along to), but what makes him stand out is that he never shies away from real talk either. Beneath the swagger, humour, and ridiculous charisma, there’s an honesty about the harsher realities of being human.
That balance is what I admire most about him. He’s very much peace and love, but the man’s got undeniable swag, and don’t even get me started on his flows. I listen to a fair amount of rap music, but there’s something about the way Prof rides a beat that has had me completely hooked for years.
My ADHD Replay Button Has Claimed Good Time Boy
From the very first moment, I’m bopping, and somehow the song only gets better with every replay. Good Time Boy has that kind of “again, again” value where one listen quickly turns into five. One of my favourite little details is the way Prof pronounces “drowning” as “drowndin” during the post-chorus. It adds even more magnetism and personality to a track already overflowing with character.
The song balances chaos, humour, swagger, and vulnerability in such a classic Prof way, and then the ending fades out with this heartfelt message that ties everything together perfectly. I love every single second of this track right down to the final note.
If Good Time Boy is anything to go by, Prof’s upcoming album of the same name — set for release on June 26th — is shaping up to be something special and I’m counting down to hear the rest of it.
